Soo, my cheap, good sounding and chinese fretless bass is for sale, yo.

Here's the pitch.

Harley Benton HBB500FLTBK 5 string fretless electric bass a.k.a. Ginger Benton Wong

- basswood body
- maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, without fret markers
- active electronics/2 band EQ
- saddle width: 46mm
- scale length: 86cm
- 1x JB pick-up and 1x MM pick-up
- die-cast machine heads
- chrome hardware
- transparent black finish
- made in China :D

I bought it for 169 euro plus shipping, and am selling it for 100 Euro.
However I'm willing to trade it for a Korg Nanopad + Korg Nanokontrol, or other interesting midi controllers or pads, NOT keyboards.

Reasons for selling it
- I suck at it
- I don't really use it
- don't have time to learn to play on it
- need midi controllers for the absurdcus live act :D

The bass was bought in 2008, from Thomann , it's in neat condition, normal wear and tear (see pics) that you'd expect from a used instrument.
Slight scuffs on the fretboard mostly because of the (roundwound)B string, nothing a little TLC won't cure.
The fingerboard has been regularly cleaned with lemon oil, body and neck also cleaned with guitar polish.

One thing that you should know is that I've received the bass with a horrible setup, so I've taken measures and put 6 coins between the neck and the body (see pics), lifting the neck, lowering the action. Now, some might consider this a defect, I'd say it's a definite upgrade because the bass plays and implicitly sounds way better than before. Plus if you're ever in dire need of change...

Here's a video of it with some quick soundsamples. Bass recorded through my Demeter Opto Compulator pedal directly into the soundcard, no post EQ whatsoever.
It has the same strings it came with from the factory, I just boiled them about a month ago. Don't know about you, but I'd say the bass sounds pretty decent.

Here's how the fretless sits in the mix, albeit a bad mix.

I have absolutely no idea whether someone is still reading my blog, for my posting has become scarcer than picnic baskets on grass in wintertime.
BUT.
on 11.11.2011 (what a great date, ay?) my album is dropping on the digital shelves of the internet.

It's called

and it's basically a Best Of with tunes from 2003-2011.
The album will be downloadable from my bandcamp account, using the old 'fan names price' shtick, meaning if you want to give me money, I'll be glad to put it in the Pay The Rent Fund, but if not, you can still download it if you enter 0 usd.
Believe it or not, I too be rather heard than paid, just like Mr.Rollins.

What a learyan intro, ay? Don't read too much into it, I woke up with a rancid cough attack and in between coughs and spits and mumbles - lo, grumpiness has cast a shadow upon my day. Ish happens, some might say, but I rather dislike mood taking over my senses. It changes everything. It turns your proud, recently corrected strut into a fast paced nervous jig, it pulls your bewildered eyebrows into an irascible cloud. It even makes your responses less mind-driven and more visceral, which would be ok up to a point, I guess, but not when you are actually required to think before you speak.
Smoldering. Sting is coming to Romania and I don't even know if I want to go see the dude.
Grump rant brought to a halt by myself reminding myself how annoying people can get when they keep on and on complaining about their tiny little existence. I'm still glad to be alive, very much so.

But then I fell asleep, again and again and again. Anyhoo, my throat is already sore, let's see what this flu has up its sleeve, I ain't going down that easily.

episode 21 - Linkin Park - The Catalyst remix

Hello ladies,

So, there was this Linkin Park "Featuring You" contest that unfortunately ended yesterday, but it's ok, I wasn't eligible anyway because of the country I live in, which is kinda of a bummer, but we're kinda used to it, right?
Right.

The contest was basically about this:

"Record your version of Linkin Park's new single, "The Catalyst," to win a spot on the band's new album.

Linkin Park is giving you 5 stems from their upcoming single. You can remix the parts, write something over them, or mute tracks and add something new. Once you submit, fans can vote on their favorites. The band will choose one winner to be featured on Linkin Park's upcoming album, A THOUSAND SUNS."

So, as I don't let petty things like Myspace legal issues and not being able to win bring me down, I did my own remix. For fun.

I went for a 'Full Rock Out' örganic approach, meaning that I wrote guitar parts, a bassline and programmed drumpatterns underneath the vocals, which were awesome btw.

Recording while filming was a whole other issue, you might as well say that shit was tough as a motherfucker. I don't handle heat so well and I wasn't really feeling well either so I apologize for the anemic playing (and the sweatmarks on my t-shirt).
I recorded/filmed the guitar parts at around 3 AM, I was barely standing I was so tired.
Both guitars and bass are oneshot tracks( ALL LIVE ), as you can see in the video, I just basically used some creative editing techniques like panning, eq-ing etc to make it sound more like a studio recording.
The audio is a tad out of sync which annoys the hell out of me, dammit, I hate when that happens.

All in all I am not really content with the end result, but then again I don't think I ever was or will be. Which is good if you wanna keep evolving, I guess.

I DID THIS FOR FUN AND I HAD A LOT OF FUN, YO.
Learned a couple of new things as well.

So without any further ado, here's my latest piece of wörk and suckage.

Hello ladies.
This is the easiest way to make a boring muzak video.
You let your colleague, Sanyi, drive you home and you hold up your camera to the window. You then later turn the footage black & white, replace the audio with an absurdcus tune from the year 2004 called 'nu funk', which features some lead-guitar work by Mr. Levente Acs and voila, you have the embodiment of visual tedium.

BTW, apparently the SC has left the factory and it's on its way :D

From the 'Bruce Lee' series ( I always wanted to have a 'series', everyone has a 'series')
It took 2 takes for all instruments and I chose the second take all 3 occasions.
What's funny about this video is that it was made in the spur of the moment, I didn't plan it, so when I recorded the drum part, the song wasn't actually written yet, I had no idea what tune I would compose on top of it. I was drumming to a rnb, funk backing track :))
I just wrote bass and guitar lines to that beat afterwards.

It's quick and sloppy, cute as a puppy as usual but I had a tremendous amount of fun while making it :)

I actually watched like 30-40 minutes of a football/soccer game ! Yesterday.
I fell asleep before the end of the game, but I was actually rooting for the Netherlands ! STROOPWAFEL, baby !! Best thing I ate lately, courtesy of Bas, our dutch intern.
Anyhow, life is what you make it, kids ! If you know what I mean.

Break out yo' 3D glasses, sit back and enjoy my first venture in the world of 3D videos.
Unfortunately, time as usual was scarce and I got real hungry at the end so I didn't do alternate takes, didn't redo the freak-ass solos, didn't program some additional breaks, didn't change the drumpattern at all and most of all, I simply forgot to move while playing. But there ya go, I'm used to myself being sloppy.
The initial plan was to film guitars as well and edit them into one single 3D video, with bass and guitar scenes alternating.
But then I got hungry.

This is a sketch of a tune we made and then abandoned yesterday at rehearsals. William filmed it so we wouldn't forget it till next rehearsals, but at the end we just scratched it 'cuz it didn't make the i.cut, which means that we can do better. Plenty more ideas to work on next time.
Anyhow, I kept and uploaded the vid because the bass growls like a mofo even if it's just cam audio.

Don't read too much into this.

The summer is upon us, it's freaking hot outside, I'm sweating like a porcupine in a sauna (I invented this expression, so I try to slip it in a sentence every time I get a chance) but still I get a very positive feeling about it all. Don't know why, when every inch of my overclogged neuronnetwork tells me the end is coming.
Something smells different about this summer, apparently in a good way. Even though weird things keep popping up along the way. Like a 140 kg big-ass drunk guy in slippers and a newspaper under his arm who threatened to kick both me an Aszti's ass if we ever pass by his house again. Apparently someone broke into his home some time ago and when we accidentally walked by his house on the way home from rehearsals, some of his synapses ignited and he had to teach someone a lesson. He introduced himself as Judoka Dracula something... in a manner that led me to believe that that name is actually known in some parts of the MS county prisons. He actually had his nice moments,though, like a brief smile when I told him it was nice meeting him. Then he waved his newspaper and victoriously turned his back on us.
Anyhoo, is that Shirley Manson in that crappy Terminator series? She looks old. I wonder if she can still fit her fist in her mouth. I'm sorry but that image has been inadvertently imprinted in the back of my eye, upside down.

This jovial weekend was spent cleaning up drum tracks and sketching a few basslines and guitar parts at the world-renowned BassWörks bedroom recording studios.
It's a lot of work trying to make 6-7 year old songs (with the drum tracks for 13 songs recorded on one long day, back in 2006) sound 2010-ish, at least production-wise. Re-orchestrations in full effect !

And let me sneak in my latest muzikal discovery, Fair To Midland.
Latest meaning that I only found out about their existence last week, though they've been around since 1998. Most of you guys should know by now that the first things I look in a band are creativity and originality. And not anybody can do what frontman Darroh Sudderth does and I'm not necessarily referring just to his huge vocal range.
Soaring melodies with some crazy-ass showmanship. Thank God for bands like this still keeping muzak interesting, there are too many cookie-cutter bands out there.

I am definitely looking forward to the upcoming album !!

I play bass in the same way I conduct a conversation - I usually have no idea what I am talking about, I may end up stuttering and uttering nonsense, most of the time I just try to avoid having to answer back, but now and then I manage to throw in something that seemingly makes people think that I actually have something to say. Weird.

The sound of the vid could be better, we were eager beavers and stood too close to the stage. Also, sorry about the shakiness but this was towards the end of the set and my arms were tired from filming.

All in all an absolutely great show, they kicked ass in reverse-engineering style. Thank God for the earplugs, they were lifesavers.
I am always a bit confused after seeing great musicians like Jojo and gang, inspiring as hell but it made me think about selling my drumkit, 'cuz I'll never be this good. I'm glad to be just an amateur bassplayer and a hobbyist drummer or something...

This was kinda rushed but here ya go, sweetie pies :*

The bass track took me about 10+ takes, I kept messing up the 7/4 breakdown, 'cuz I didn't know it was in 7. Damn FL Studio and that ctrl+shift+c clone function :))
The guitar track also took me like 7+ takes 'cuz I kept throwing the bottleneck slide on the bed and couldn't find it during the slide part.
Anyhow, not bad for a one-day fun job :)

2005, biggest televised gig I've ever played. The Golden Stag. It was raining and cold, by the time we walked on stage my Etnies were soaking wet and believe me, it's not funky to play bass with water in your sneakers. But I survived.
I think I've never been as stressed on stage as I was then. One of the few times I had problems with my bass. Because of the huuuge lighting rig, I had a pretty big hum in my signal, so the TV guys were constantly changing stuff in order to fix that. They brought another bass amp, instead of the tube one, they even brought me another bass at on time, but I was out of luck, I ended up playing sideways, facing away from the lights, holding my bass like a machine gun towards the audience.
It was cold, too. I hate playing in the cold, that definitely takes the 'f' out of Funkay.
Anyhoo, it was a great experience. Met Natalie Imbruglia, she danced to one of our tunes at the after party, Daniel Johns was there, too but he was kind of wasted. Rakenroll.

On another matter, this past few weeks have been weeks of novelty emerging from the ashes of the already familiar.
Discovering new muzak is an awesome process. It's like tasting food and having all the flavours trickle down your tongue one by one, building one unique aroma.

A bass, a bass amplifier head, a 4x10 cabinet, a pedalboard, a bassdrum, a tom and a floor tom, a hihat stand, a cymbal stand and a drum stool. That's what we had to carry down from my place on the 4th floor to the car - to rehearsal and back again. No wonder there's no room for anything anymore in the Crib Of Love, I have too much stuff.

The iCoRy rehearsal went pretty ok - considering that carrying and setting up the gear took about 2 hours and we could only rehearse for like 45 minutes because Mr.A had a train to catch :))
In his defense, for those who don't know what a cool dude he is, he was in such a hurry that he actually called a cab BEFORE he counted down the last tune ! :))

What I like most about appearing on LIVE television is that it takes me about one minute to repeat myself 3 times, telling the same thing over again using different words and different types of shoulder shrugs without having answered the moderator's actual question. Oh, and that usually my sentences make sense, I just tend to mumble the last few words, so there's always an aura of mystery to what I am saying.
Today Big Z and me were invited to talk about zee singlecut bass yet again, reiterating what has been said about us winning the competition the thousandth time. This time live. Yay. Me being sleepy and sort of hungover. Yay.

If this experience has taught me anything, it's that :

01. If Dana promises me chocolate in order for me to want to appear on live tv, I better make sure my demands are met. I am expecting one tablet of White, one tablet of Nussknackers and a bag of Chokotoff. I know you are reading this :P YOU BETTER DELIVER !!!! :P

02. Underneath the apparent chaos and cigarette smoke in the broadcast room - there is order and a Hery ! \m/ hats off to the dude for that, I know I couldn't do that type of thing :P too hectic for me. I am a calm and peace loving individual, sort of like a hippie. Without the long hair and the patchouli stench.

03. Live TV is no biggie if you imagine that you are in your safe place and you picture a giant, dancing teddy bear instead of the moderator.

04.

the last one I just made up, I didn't actually learn it today.

I am tired, today's work is postponed till tomorrow.

Today I had a major, life-changing decision to make. I was at the local store, dazed and confused, like I usually end up if I don't leave the house for a couple of days, when it entered my field of vision. There it was - the fruit juice stand.
All kinds of varieties screaming at me in yellowish and sometimes red coloured cartons. Vitamins, vitamins, vitamins !! No preservatives !! No bad mojo for your fragile boo-boo body ! Just the way we like it.
But today something was different. There was a new carton staring back at me. Still in a yellowish fashion, but with a taste of purplish-pink.
It said - *brand name* + MILD JUICE !!
I was awestruck, afraid and bewildered at the same time. We all fear the unknown but sometimes the novelty renders us defenseless. As was the case today. My life flashed before my eyes, I was transported back in the days when we had to dissolve chunky almost jelly-like thick liquids in vast amounts of water to obtain sweet, liver-murdering fruit juices - with natural-identical aroma, of course. I started pondering if I would be making a mistake by purchasing this product. Is the "MILD JUICE" a threat to my fierce manhood? Will it soften my character of steel? Will it make me less of a person? "MILD"
Then I read the fineprint underneath - 'reich an natürlichen Vitamin C. Vitaminquelle aus 10 weiteren Vitaminen' Fuck. They got me. I bought the shit.

I gotta eat something, all this vitamin-talk has made me hungry :P

I've just ordered one of these graphic tablets

hopefully it'll arrive soon and I'll be able to draw at home, too, not just at work.
Though nothing can really beat the Cintiq at the office.
I am not much of an artist but I do like sketching and I do have fun spending hours shading. On top of it all, I think I've just spent my last monetary resources on the tablet, so it'd better work.

On another note, "hemoptysis" is almost ready, I just need to touch up the lyrics and track the vocals. I don't think it will be a chartbreaker, but I definitely think it's gonna be a step up from all my previous stuff, both composition and production-wise. That's what I love about life, things keep evolving, I'm always learning new things, even if I don't realize it. Yesterday for example, I learned that if you put your Tele on a guitarstand near the door, you can knock it down when opening the door.

I really dig Janek Gwizdala's expressive playing, he's starting to become one of my favourite bassists.

I hope the weather will soon warm up, I am sick and tired of this cold. It takes about 6 seconds till the mucus in my nosey-nose freezes stiff after I step out the door. We don't like that. I like the word 'mucus', though. Reading it in hungarian makes me think of puppies and teddybears.

This here post is for those who know the difference between a tube preamp and a solid state preamp. For those who don't know the difference - it's like - omlette and then omlette dü frohmage. Or vice versa, the tubes being the cheese and all.

I had a chance to play around with the Warwick Hellborg preamp and I really liked it.
I am really not a tech-talker, don't know much about gear but I do know what I like. I dig the Hellborg pre.
Unfortunately it's way out of my league so you won't see me carrying one around to gigs anytime soon. But it's ok, I am really content with my cheap, chinese made Ashdown rig.

Enough with the bass mambo jambo, let's bore you to death with a video :

On a lighter and way more interesting note - my main man, Zosolto is on his way to NAMM, where he will be handed a Warwick singlecut bass, which we designed (applause), yay. He'll get to sit around the Warwick booth and meet Mikey Inez, Bootsy Collins, TM Stevens, Jonas Hellborg, Pnut, Ryan Martinie and maybe even Rob Trujillo and he doesn't even know who they are :)))) FML

I'm not necessarily referring to my own shit, you know. Just because I haven't blogged in a long time doesn't mean that I've lost all faith in the modalities I have learned to express my emotions with. I've just been introspecting. And as we all know, introspection never killed anyone, introspection with a gun did.

So, to keep all of y'all 4-5 readers up to date with what has been the goings-on in my life lately... here you go, in pretty random order:
- think I gained a kilo.
- am drinking some kinda medicinal indonesian fruit wonder juice, courtesy of my big bro. have no idea if it actually does something but it tastes like wet socks.
- am working on new iCoRy stuff, pretty stoked about it, I've learned a thing or two over the years :)
- been/am listening to a lot of music.
- played a couple of gigs.
- been scammed out of 5000 forintz by the hungarian subway.
- flew, had an eargazm listening to Marcus Miller on Wharfedale speakers at PJ's sis' place, saw Alice In Chains, died and got reborn, slept then flew again.
- cleaned my room broom-style the other day because my vacuum makes weird noises.
- bought a new toothbrush, yay.
- ordered a dd7 and an odb-3, those are effect pedals for those who don't know. am planning to retire my trusty Zoom 506 which I got back in 1999 from Radone, who inherited it from Jean, whom I just met this summer for the first time. Very nice dude btw.
- loving the new Godmode record, great band, great guys.
- been reassured that life is beautiful.
- dropped an egg this morning.
- have pretty interesting plans for a person who doesn't make plans :)
- bought a new phone, the 3rd phone in my life, think it'll last me for the next 50 or so years.
- watched a couple of good movies, watched a couple of not so good movies. (don't dload "Ninja Assassin 2009", it's a virus). reinstalled Windows.
- sat at the mixing desk for the first time in my life, pushing them faders up and down for Godmode.
- got real drunk from 2 beers ! twice !
- bruised my left index finger with a lock.
- am starting to run out of space in my crib.
- am thinking about buying a dogue de bordeaux.
- am thinking about playing on and winning the lottery so I can buy a house with a big yard so I could buy and keep a dogue de bordeaux.

that's about it, I guess.

Long time no post and I am really sorry about that. It's not that I didn't have anything to say, I just didn't feel like blogging, I guess.
There actually are better things to do then just writing about things we think would be better to do than blogging.
Nothing interesting to bring you up-to-date with. Life is as usual, wonderful with a taste of sour-and-sweet chinese chicken. Growing, learning, forgetting, discovering.

Haven't posted in a while, been kinda busy and kept telling myself that there are more important things to do than blogging...and there were.
Anyhow, here I am squeezing in a quick post between a post-gym shower and bedtime.

Latest happenings in my life have revealed how random fate's withered web can be.

Accidents happen. Accidents happen even to people close to you. You don't really think that that is possible, but they do. It's then when you realize how fragile life is. Thank God Jencike is doing ok.

Lost my wallet on Sunday, with ID, bank card, some cash, 2 guitar picks and other paraphernalia. Didn't give it much thought, because these things happen.
Got a call on Monday, from a waitress, that she found my wallet. I won't go into details but it turned out to be a sorta funny situation. I did not go out with her !

An old favourite band ( yet another ) reunited again. What is it with these reunions?
Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate, I really do, it's just kinda too hard to believe, I guess.
